I think this is a marvelous idea. Is it currently in practice in some churches? Just as we trust God with our tithes and offerings given at church, so we can trust God for the use of these funds. It is very hard to ask for financial help and this will meet a need, especially now. May God bless it.

  1. Hard to Ask

We practice this in our church, Christ Fellowship of Kansas City. It has been working well for over a year now. But, we expect it to be even more helpful as the economic crises develops. Jim Elliff

How about...

Jim: Why can't we just be open and plain with one another? You know, like a true body that functions together? In a body, if a hand has a need it is not shunned but is favored with attention, care, splint, and tenderness. While your intent is to protect people's privacy, in reality it coddles their pride. Don't be a caring church, be a true body of Christ. Pride is contrary to body living. John

  1. It's not Pride but Shame
    Posted On: 03/05/09 01:46:29 AMAge 55, IA
that makes one unable to ask. The vast majority of churches make you feel inferior if you can't pay your bills. I would take the idea of the cash further though. Cash would go much farther if we would give of ourselves and our talents. A church member who is a mechanic could provide car repairs for free to the disadvantaged; doctors and dentists could provide services for free. I am disabled. When I moved into my house I was told by my pastor that the church had plumbers and carpenters to help. Unfortunately, when I ran into a plumbing bill, I was referred to the treasurer. When will the church "get it" - it's not their money people need or want; they need "the body" to minister to their needs.

  2. We Do That Also

John, your idea is right also. In our church we do that alongside this additional approach. However, I don't think that the shyness of some, or the chronic issues of others always mean pride is at work in keeping them less vocal. But, it is something to think over. Thanks for the input. We plan to rev up our "helps" type ministries in the near future. That is, we are going to put a new emphasis on asking people to consider needs in the body that they can meet with their hands and money. But, again, it is going to be weighted on the side of Christians keeping a "perceived needs" list and attempting to step in without compulsion to help. We'll see how it works. It goes on to a certain level already, but we want to see more. My main issue is that we should be more ready for what we are about to experience. JE
