Why do you think "Short of invoking a benevolent creator" means "a designer is currently the best explanation"? He didn't say that and you're putting words in his mouth.
Also, "many physicists" does not equal the entire scientific community.
The reason scientists (including religious scientists) don't invoke God to solve scientific problems, is because invoking God doesn't solve anything. Invoking God equals giving up, and competent scientists don't give up.

Here are a few of the scientists who did invoke the God of the Bible and no sane person who accuse them of "giving up". Copernicus who was a priest, Kepler said he got his whole idea that the sun was the center of the solar system from the Bible, Galileo said he read and believed the Bible but the church that stood against him did not understand what they read, Isaac Newton said his main work was NOT science but the study of The Bible. Newton said he got many of his ideas from the Bible and that science was his hobby but The Bible was his life work. Albert Einstein said that the more he studied the universe the more obvious it became that there was a being so supreme that created it, that it made everything that man did of no consequence. Are you saying that these men gave up or were not real scientists. Our whole system of science is built upon the foundation that these men discovered. If you are going to look to scientist who are all mere men, then at least look to the ones who made discoveries that have been proven by time to be true. Men followed Ptolemy for hundreds of years and even burnt men at the stake who disagreed with him. But all know now that Ptolemy was wrong and the earth is not at the center of it all. Isaac newton said that anyone who thinks they have disproved the Bible will be proven wrong in time and will be found to be fools. Can you name a scientist who discovered more than Newton. He discovered calculus, the laws of light, the laws of motion, the law of gravity, the reflecting telescope of which the Hubble is this type, and I have not even mentioned his greatest work. All these men invoked the Name of the God of the Bible. But even Steven Hawking said that man can look for how the universe came to be but WHY the universe is here is the the reason that God alone knows of. Lou Newton

Let us not confuse the information as supporting the philosophy of Intelligent Design. The information recommends to us an Intelligent Designer. We have His Word in our hands and know what He said about His creative efforts. It is my understanding that the philosophy of Intelligent Design, as practiced, may be inconsistent with the Intelligent Designer's written account. Best Wishes,

Science fiction

Ever since I can remember, I've been an avid science fiction fan. Even 40 years ago, a popular theme in science fiction stories was the existence of multiple or parallel universes. But today, it amazes me that materialistic scientists really believe in this sort of thing! It's simply a pathetic attempt to escape from the reality of God. How sad. When I was growing up, it was easy to tell the difference between science fact and science fiction. But today, many people - including so-called intellectuals - can't seem to distinguish one from the other.

Really it's no surprise at all when you consider men with Doctorates in Physics saying such silly things as seeing no evidence for a Designer. So it's no lrage leap for them to try to come up with any excuse but a God they will eb accountable to, no matter how ridiculous the theory. If Scientists can corporately approve of an unproven idea as fact just to have have the illusion of plausible deniablility for their moral turpitude, then a multiple universe concept is no great leap; Fantasy is still fantasy.
