And an atheist. I feel it proper to know mine enemy.
Is your faith so shallow that you have to write such a disturbing piece on the movie? Instead of being an offended Christian why don't you go out and be a real Christian.

Illogical?

You make a lot of assertions about reason and logic.. I just pulled this one out because it's the last thing I read:
"Of course, at the same time Maher accuses his opponents of these nasty things, he is doing the same things that he just accused them of doing. Maher’s tirade is not only logically self-contradictory, and, hence, irrational, it is also hypocritical. Instead of pointing fingers at religious people, especially Christians, Maher needs to look at himself in the mirror!"
Logically self-contradictory, and, hence, irrational? Aside from using up all the commas in the world, that's just silly.
Hypocrisy may reflect poorly on a person [Newt Gingrich's 3 Wives and at least 2 affairs come immediately to mind] but it doesn't negate everything that the hypocrite has said. If I'm newt Gingrich leading the attack on President Clinton for an embarrassing affair and I've married two of my mistresses (on my 3rd wife).. and I served Divorce papers to my first wife while she was receiving Chemo in the hospital.. that makes me [Newt] a horrible person [he is]. That doesn't, however mean that Clinton wasn't a letch who cheated on his wife. Claiming Clinton was a philanderer was not irrational in and of its self.
Even if Bill Mahar is all the things he attributes to the religious, how is that self-contradictory? You say it is because you deny his assertion but that's the matter of the argument. It's not contradictory, it's a point of contention.
Dr., I have to wonder if that's a PhD in religiosity.

Would you expect anything less? All arguments against Christianity are full of holes. Especially as more ridiculous the arguments become. Bill Maher obviously has not been humbled by God...or maybe he has and is fighting it with all his might. Good article.

- You've got to be kidding me
| Posted On: 10/04/08 02:49:39 PM | | Age 47, CA | All arguments against christianity are full of holes? Let's be real for a minute here.
The bible contains so many falsehoods, scientific mistakes, and internal contradictions that it's barely readable. The silly myths (talking snakes? worldwide flood? anyone seen an angel recently?) and immoral 'morals' (hate your family, love your sky fairy...slavery is okay if you don't mistreat the slave 'too' much...daughters offered into sexual slavery...genocide demanded by the chortling demon of the book) have remanded it to the 'sick fiction' section of my collection.
And in case you wonder, yes I have read the bible. Cover to cover. A minimum of seven times. I was a deacon in the Evangelical Free Church and reading the bible was part of what brought me out of ignorant superstition and into a rational world view.
Can you refute any of this? I'm willing to have you try. I'm willing to read, think, and respond. Are you? Or is your god so tiny that people who reject him scare you? Click here to reply to this post
Maher misled

I would not call Maher a liar. Rather he is misled. He is telling things as he sees them, and by appearances some of what he says can appear to be true. And some are indeed true.
There are many accounts of virgin births, that is true. But the reason as to why he is obviously unaware. Some things in pagandom have indeed been adopted by Christendom; some being from those very pagan myths. Thus is the reason for the deception not only of Maher, but the public in general. Certain aspects of those myths, such as the goddess "mother" are not Christian but are pagan. Many pagan ideas were assimilated by Constantine in the Third Century, and have become "doctrine".
Further, there are indeed "fanatics" that say they are Christian as well. They too can be dangerous. If anyone who does not behave like Christ, he is NOT a Christian. So it appears Maher is calling a spade what it is. That is not lying, but being truthful.
Regrettably Maher has lumped Christianity with professed Christians. What he needs is to hear what genuine Christians have to say and not necessarily "scholars".
