There is no god so this discussion is moot!

God *is*. And just beinc curious...why did you bother posting a comment on a Christian website if you believe that the point is 'moot'?

No Need to be Schooled

You mention that Bill Maher "never studied under a real biblical scholar" ... perhaps this is true. But, if you are going to write about "basic information" - then, do so. You cannot explain: talking snakes, Moses living to 900 years old, Noah's ark having two every species on it - there is not a dry dock on earth big enough to construct such a thing, let alone back then or the ability to walk on water or part a sea. Honestly, we all know that this could never happen. If you don't trust me - try it. It is clear, one doesn't have to study "under a real biblical scholar" to argue to the bibles teachings - these teachings are simply not true. I will leave you with this: if a person killed another and his excuse was "god told me too" ... why wouldn't you believe them? God did in fact talk to them as well, as I'm should he has to all of you. I also encourage healthy debating.

No, seriously!

Let's see: you profess belief in a three-in-on god, born of a virgin he impregnated, and then sacrificed himself to himself so that his creation can be saved from his own wrath. Bill Maher says that such is ridiculous! Why would you disagree?

  1. Are you trying to describe the Trinity???
    Posted On: 02/03/09 03:08:04 PMAge 29, MD
You obviously do not understand the very thing that you are attempting to discredit. Straw men are easy to knock down, aren't they?

Not intended to be unbiased
Posted On: 10/04/08 01:11:37 PM Age 41, MD
I've seen Religulous, and it's clearly not intended to be scholarly, unbiased, or respectful of religion. Rather, the intent is right there in the title: to point out that large numbers of people believe in some pretty ridiculous things: alien ghost implants that can only be removed with e-meters, flying horses, talking snakes, virgin birth, and so on. Furthermore, a lot of these people believe not only that the end of the world is approaching, but that it is desirable. That's part of what makes religion dangerous.

Yes, Religion Makes a Lot of Sense!

"He came down to earth as an incarnation of Himself, to sacrifice Himself to Himself in order to forgive His people, who he had made in the image of Himself, and save them from--wait for it!--the wrath of...HIMSELF! Taaa-daaaah!!!"

A 750 word limit is Arrogant, Irrational Hypocrisy
Posted On: 10/04/08 12:55:00 PM Age 43, CA
How could a rational person refute all of incorrect information and half truths on this site it only 750 words? The bible is completely inconsistent, so to use it as a basis for logical argument is simply absurd! To take just one of millions of problems with the bible: If there is a commandment about not killing, then why does God tell you to kill in other parts of the bible? Please explain clearly so there will be no possible miss-understanding. As you are all clearly bible scholars and experts in the field, as your previous posts show. I will assume that your post will have absolutely no mistakes, or any information left out, as your will of course be speaking fro God himself...

  1. A question for you...
    Posted On: 02/03/09 03:16:15 PMAge 29, MD
Since you obviously must know something of the Bible, please give reference to the scriptures in which God is telling us to kill. Thank you! P.S. The commandment you refer to in the 10 commandments says "You shall not *murder*". There is a difference.

How Dare He question!
Posted On: 10/04/08 10:59:53 AM Age 97, SPAIN
It is obvious that Mr. Maher is a terrorist! How dare he question the very things that we know that are true! He should be sent to jail for verily questioning the virgin birth! Every school child knows that Mary was a virgin and that Jesus is the only lord! I think that he should be sued for libel for even suspecting that Christ didn't walk on water! The very nerve to say that Jesus didn't promise his followers clothes, shelter and food! He obviously doesn't know how the Christian George W. Bush and the American government indeed cares for the poor! Indeed we are faced with someone worse than a terrorist, someone who actually questions what we know to be true, the holy scripture. That Jesus is lord and that all other believers of other religions are heathens and are going to burn in hell.

Why trust a god, any way?
Posted On: 10/04/08 10:01:18 AM Age 48, AZ
“The fool says in his heart there is no God.” I interpret this to mean that even a fool can see through the nonsense of theism. BTW, I don't see how "going to heaven," whatever that means, solves anything. Suppose you get to heaven, then you choose to rebel against god? God might have even destined you to become the next satan. God doesn't have to arrange the universe for your convenience, so as far as you know, you could have drawn the short straw in the next stage of "god's plan."

  1. Read before criticizing.....
    Posted On: 02/03/09 03:27:49 PMAge 29, MD
You really should read the Bible before attacking it with such unfounded nonsense. God knows all things, including all that will happen in the future. He knows who is His and who is not. He knows and has said that such a thing will not happen.

I'm glad to see

that "Arrogant, Irrational Hypocrisy...Falsehoods, Bigotry, Ignorance, and Hypocrisy" are now problematic to religious apologists. Your review is considered, well evidenced, and persuasive--if you begin from a christianist worldview and if you have been raised on a steady diet of American right-wing evangelical propaganda. But if you apply the same test to your own website, to the vast majority of the arguments of the far-right on social issues, to much of the rhetoric and policy of the Bush administration, and to the coded blatherings of the far-right political figures in Congress and in the judiciary, you must reach the same conclusions. Your review claims several of the grounds of modern rhetoric: that we evidence, that we proceed logically, that we concede at times, that we do not specifically vilify individuals, that we steer clear of the logical fallacies. That's refreshing, I must concede, but I perceive a sadly typical hypocrisy too. You claim those grounds on offense, and perhaps have a point; but recall that Mr. Maher was chased from his position as a well-respected humorist on television after he made remarks about the 9/11 hijackers that were, in retrospect, quite perceptive and were nevertheless reasonable free speech. Since he has proven an apt critic of hypocrisy and blind error on the right and also the left. Are your premises as sound as his? Do you and your speakers and pastors and bloggers dispute the Bill of Rights and claim that the US is a christian nation, for example, or that homosexuals should be the victims of state-sponsored bigotry? YOu know you do. When Mr. Maher and I no longer feel threatened by christ-citing hypocrites, and by their violent and underhanded acolytes, we will no longer feel the need to fight your devious rhetoric with our own. When your greedy, often insane high priests stop trying to govern by the book of revelations, and stop trying to elect people who care nothing for the future because they imagine a privileged escape from the problems they create, we'll stop trying to embarrass you with your 2000-year history of lies, murder, theft, and graft. When your people stop trying to enforce on our children a culture of mindless magic instead of reason and science, then we'll stop pushing back with annoying proof and evidence that you are ignorant and blind. So I'm happy to see that you admit, even in this one case, that there is a rhetorical and logical approach to disputing points of opinion or fact or history or logic. If you come to play on that rhetorical field, and play honestly, you will not last long as a subscriber to supernatural creeds. Sadly, I predict that you will not stay long, because supernatural creeds are far easier to defend. But if you hide behind your faith in matters of logic, please stay hidden so the rest of us can go about life in the real world. ER

Circular Reasoning Doesn't Work
Posted On: 10/04/08 08:28:57 AM Age 37, VA
If all you have to defend your holy scriptures is circular reasoning, "God exists because the Bible says so" AND "The Bible is correct because it is the word of God," then you have no rational basis for any type of argument. The belief that a cosmic Jewish zombie, who was his own father, can make you live forever if you symbolically eat his flesh and telepathically tell him you accept him as your master, so he can remove an evil force from your soul that is present in humanity because a rib-woman was convinced by a talking snake to eat from a magical tree. Yeah, that makes perfect sense.
