Let bygon's be bygon's. I believe God created creativity for us to show other's OUR version of Him. Why knock it? If its not what you think, let it go. I hear all the skeptical outlooks and I'm not swayed. I believe God -- just, mighty, loving, biblically written as He is -- He is just as able to be expressed through us in a creative manner. If we were all so stiff on judging people for sharing their creativity -- the world would be pretty bare.

It saddens me

I'm truly saddened that as Christians we have to explain a book like this as anything but heresy. It is truly anti-christ in every shape, manner and form and just a brief visit to its content quickly reveals its nature in direct oppostion to all the work accomplished by Christ on the cross. These types of discussions, critiques and reviews of a piece of fiction such as this, which by all Christians should be considered absolute garbage, are evidence of the apostasy in the church and those that call on the name of Christ. Not only is it upsetting that many cannot see the reality of this book and call themselves Christian but they actually embrace it!

I think many of the misunderstandings you Jan and others have would be cleared up by speaking to the author personally and to Wayne Jacobson and others involved in this amazing publication which has been nothing short of miraculous in its own history. Before condemning a fiction book you really should understand the author's heart and his love for Jesus.

Crucial information

I can't hardly express my gratitude to you for this information on the "Shack". I just had a three day visit with my sister and she was immersed in this book, encouraging anyone and everyone to read it. Totally oblivious that it is meant to be 'fiction'. How many more are convinced after reading this that its the gospel truth. Satan is indeed busy and its a sure sign of our Lords return. Christians need wake up to the deception that will fall upon the earth and be grounded in His Word as a foundation for anything that comes their way. They will be equipped to recognize deception and reject it. We should all be ready to give a wise and loving answer to those who believe Satans lies. My fellow Christians brothers and sisters out there....Stay in the Word !!! Maranatha

I am not sure what you mean by this because Jesus is the Word. I try to stay in relationship to him and hear his words. This seems to be what his disciples did and they had lots of questions and misunderstandings. Jesus showed them Father's Love which he wanted them to pass on because that is what is a mighty witness to Jesus to the people around us.

It 's about a relationship...
Posted On: 06/26/08 09:33:03 AM Age 48, CA
By your comments on the book it makes me think you haven't read it. The reason God was a woman was because that is how the lead character would accept Him where he was at in his life. My husband who is a Pastor, and I, loved the book. We have followed Christ most of our lives. We know God walks with us everyday and without His constant love and guidance we are lost. But still at times a relationship with an invisible God is hard. This book opened that up for us. God met this man right where he was and gave him just what he needed. I've never thought before reading this book, how awesome it would be to be with Jesus in the flesh laying on a dock watching the stars with Him ....now it is something I long for someday as I now have a better understanding of what it means to have a personal relationship with our Lord and Savior. Be Blessed!

NOW I know WHY
Posted On: 06/26/08 09:16:08 AM Age 51, TX
Close friends kept raving over this book telling me how I just HAD to read it. I never "felt" led, wanted to, nor made the time to order it. I give the Holy Spirit thanks. Apparently He has protected me once again from such books. He did the same for me when I had NO desire to read Purposefilled Life. Everyone was pushing it down my throat, but I just could not read it... the same for The Shack. Thank you GOD for Your mighty protection. Sure, I could read these books and still maintain my walk with the Lord, but the question rises; would I open a door that cannot be closed or while open, destroy something or allow something bad in? No matter, I am glad that I have not read the book, I would rather read God's Word, and NOT out of the New International Version either.... the one that had a Lesbian on the board... the one that leaves out MAJOR scripture passages... the one that I refuse my children to memorize at their school even though it is the version of choice (I have approached leadership on this and pray that they change the version before the new school year comes!)

I had the same information about a lesbian being on the committee translating the NIV Bible, but if you look on their credits you will find all the members are male.

Papa?

I was utterly horrified by this book, which was given to me by someone whom I believe is truly a Christian, who was telling everyone he knew about it and had purchased 20 copies to give to people. Aside from the many obvious problems with the book, one suspicion was raised in my mind that I haven't found anyone commenting about, and I'm curious as to whether anyone knows anything about this. Young was raised in New Guinea. Isn't there an influence of Polynesian culture there? And isn't the Polynesian earth goddess called...Papa?

Paranoia

This site and the articles continues to make me chuckle. The book is not a dark book by any stretch. Intelligent people led by the Holy Spirit, will thoroughly enjoy this book and I'm quite sure that God will use it to glorify his Kingdom as he can do with anything. Read it, be intelligent,....and yes, be discerning but please don't be "paranoid"...lol. This article....just cracks me up! There's nothing in the book that is going to warp your mind. That takes time and I don't see one book manipulating the truth of God or our truth beliefs in Jesus Christ. It's a very tame, good natured, and fun read. Don't go all "harry potter" on this folks!!

  2. Response to Mr. Paranoia
    Posted On: 06/26/08 06:42:34 AMAge 56, AR
To Mr. Paranoia, Your remarks only confirm the scriptures in the Bible that warn of the characteristics of people in the "latter days". It also tells us of the spirit of deception that will be poured out in all nations, and that if possible, even the very "elect" would be deceived. The "elect" being the "Christians". Yes even a so called "Christian" can be deceived if they are not discerning, and know what the words of God teach us. You said, "Intelligent people led by the Holy Spirit". Not everyone fits into this category. Not even a lot of main line, so called pastors. And I really wonder about you. "Professing themselves to be wise, He made a show of them openly", or in other words He exposed their total ignorance, and stupidity. You evidently do not discern the harm this book is causing weak willed, or uneducated people,{about scriptures), who are looking for anything to help them to "feel good" about their lives. Well I have news for you. There is a Heaven, and there is a HELL! Everyone has been given a choice as to which place they want to go when they die. There will be no excuses when you stand before God. Man does not live by "bread" (food) alone. But by "EVERY" word (spirit food) that comes out of the mouth of GOD. Not just the words that man chooses to hear, or twist, to mean what he chooses for them to mean. It may help some to twist the truth of Gods words to get them through this life, and help them to "feel good" about themselves, but in the end of their lives, it will have meant absolutely nothing! You'll see.

Sadly even subscribers to ElijiahList have been bombarded with emails describing how "Wynona Judd" (yeah like SHE is an expert on God) LOVED this book and felt it brought her closer to knowing God. HEY WYNONA, WANNA KNOW GOD READ YOUR BIBLE.

A denominational leader mailed me this book
Posted On: 06/25/08 07:06:31 AM Age 54, WA
I pastor a church and people were asking me what I thought of The Shack. I hadn't read it but a few days later I received a copy from the overseer of our district; he had mailed each pastor a copy. Normally I don't waste time reading fiction but I decided to read it. I would never recommend this book to anyone. The Shack is one more thing that erodes the truth of who God really is. That may not be the author's intent but that's what the book does. Stay away from it and stick with that which is pure in its depiction of God. Each Sunday, pastors have the opportunity to share the truth about God with our communities. Compared to the amount of time people spend watching TV, surfing the web, and reading whatever they're reading, our time is very limited to share the truth. I pastor a wonderful group of people but I often find myself almost begging them to not only read the Bible, but to study the Bible and ask the Holy Spirit to teach them the TRUE nature and character of God. The deception that has entered the church has completely warped the true nature and character of God Himself. If Christians don't really KNOW Him, His true nature and character, they'll fall for anything. Books like this don't help.

  1. Who is God?
    Posted On: 06/25/08 05:33:36 PMAge 53, CANADA
I find your comments without any substance. Have you spoken to the author? Is your theology reformed? Is all your understanding biblical? How do you reconcile love and wrath in God? Is your version of justice based on the legalistic penal substitution doctrine or grace doctrines? I find that it is easy to criticize others by picking on some minor issues which you think are unbiblical. I have been able to do this many times listening to sermons over the years. It did not help me to build my relationship with Father. Let God show himself to people as Jesus showed himself to his disciples - it took them some time to recognize that he was God in the flesh.

God is not whoever/whatever we think or want him to be. The pastor to whom you replied is so right! The apostles spent 3 years with God Himself and they didnt really know Him until He came back to visit them AFTER the ressurection. They had all kinds of preconceived ideas about Him. We cant just make up or "feel" something that tells us what or who He is. His Holy Word describes Him for us. This stuff is ABSOLUTE! Who God/Jesus/Holy Spirit is is not to be debated or law vs. grace....it simply IS. There are actually a lot of absolutes in Christianity. Post modern Christians want to expand these absolutes to fit their own thoughts and feelings about God. And to anyone who says to get back into the Bible, we are intolerant or ignorant or looking only at law and no grace or gospel. It is a sad day in Christianity when people would rather get their views/beliefs of Holy God from a sinful fiction writer than from God's very own words.

      1. Read the scriptures
        Posted On: 06/27/08 02:16:14 AMAge 53, CANADA
John 3:16 says "for God so loved the world that he gave his only begotten Son" not for God so hated sin that ... His motivation in enduring the cross was not bloodlust, or even a need for punishment, but love. Jesus’ reason he was going to die was to show us his love: "Greater love has no one than this, than one lay down his life for his friends". (Jn 15:13). John 13 says " A NEW commandment I give unto you love one another as I have loved you so all men will know you are my disciples." I find these scriptures speak volumes to what the book is trying to convey about the Father. His motivation to us is firstly love because "God is love" I don't think this is who we think Jesus is it is what the scriptures declare him to be.

Where in the world did you get that anyone--author or those who replied--believe that God is just waiting around to zapp us? Yes, God is Love...however He is also holy and cannot abide sin. For those of us who have accepted His Son's work, we will not be judged for our sins, but the ones who have rejected will. The point of the article is that this author is making God (the Holy Trinity) human...
