Start with helping the church become live

If you really care about the church you will start to use language acceptable to Jewish people (eg stop saying "Christ"), then the church can become alive again, as Paul puts it, and stop flailing about with all this nonsense.
The fact is, "Christians" have become a lawless people and a rootless people, that is the reason they flail about in all directions.
Saddleback is just an anti-semitic church, in the SBC you can do whatever you want because there's no hierarchy, no discipline, that is why unfortunately, the SBC once a beautiful pearl, can no longer be relied upon.

Warren and Dewaay

Pastor Bob,
You preached the gospel, and did not compromise with Warren's PDL heresy, even face to face with him. God bless you for your stand on Sola Scriptura and the other four "Solas" of the Reformation. Even if the Southern Baptist Convention and the Assemblies of God become PDL apostates who disregard the "Solas," you have not. Bob Dewaay has be slandered as having caved-in to Rick Warren, and now embraces him. NOT TRUE! Bob Dewaay stands by his book "Redefining Christianity" from 2006 in opposing PDL.

The bigger picture

Evangelicals in America are in much bigger trouble than the influence of the watered-down gospel of The Purpose Driven Life. While Warren puts people into a leaky lifeboat, let's look around to see how our own boat is sinking. The divorce rate, our kids leaving never to return, the influence of the media over the way we think - we're so enamored of the world we've lost the authority to "Thus saith the Lord" with any conviction.

Reconsider the Word

To: false teacher poster -
Perhaps back up to Matthew 7:1-5 before citing scripture and maybe you would think twice about posting. I find it amazing how we can all use the Scripture to defend our Christian presuppositions. Our understanding is so limited even though in our arrogance we claim to know things we truly cannot comprehend. This is not a judgment but simply an observation.

Warren DeWaay Fathers Day?

DeeWaay has recently stated he agrees in private with Warren on doctrine and theology, giving him the right hand of fellowship in the form of a proud and very public big hug (broadcast to the world personally by DeWaay). Does he agree with Warren celebrating fathers day with unrepentant homosexual activists that also agree on so called christian doctrine with Warren? See the article at http://christianresearchnetwork.com/?p=5141 Is DeWaay also tailoring his speech and actions to his audience? One way with Warren in private and other ways with other Christian audiences? Posted June 5th at 18:49 Thanks Brandon! S.S.

I was blessed and moved by your approach to Rick Warren and his ministry philosophy. Thank you. Your two points are at the top of a long list of problems many of us would have with Warren's philosophy and practice. I will pass this along to our church leaders.
We have been the recipients of refugees from a Warren-like pastor in the last two years. From the ending of Sunday School to the removal of The Lord's Table, I have seen far too much damage being done in the name of church-growth.

I wonder.....

There is quite a bit of rancour between religious thinkers. Also, there has been debate over sola-scriptura vs. tradition i.e. the Catholic Church. Of course, we see articles like this one debating one persons perspective or truth vs. another persons both of which are claimants to Christianity.
A couple of questions I always ask is first...what religion is God? Second, did God stop talking to us after Jesus died and rose from the dead? Third, knowing that Jesus was God incarnate and came to His earthly existance to take our sin upon himself, what was His overall message to us? In other words, why do we spend the time to read scripture? Finally, what did Christians do to practice their faith prior to the bible being in existence?
We might also consider that only 1/3 of the worlds population is Christian. Two thirds aren't. So, while Christianity certainly is big....it doesn't dominate so how should we spread the message? God does want His message spread across the world and I think the Christian message is the one to salvation. Assuming God does still communicate with His creation, do you think He might be giving out spiritual advice? Maybe we need a healthy balance of scripture and tradition and new emergent ideas to finally get the point across to the two thirds who are still lost. Or maybe we can remain stoic and unyielding so other religions will grow instead. We can then continue to debate an even smaller minority about how right we are.
Just wondering......

Bob, loved your article! Thank you for writing! I am wondering what your thoughts are on Christians being involved in politics? Is it something that the Bible speaks to? My pastor came back from that conference and said something about us not being able to affect the political climate/economy etc., after saying that Christians are the single largest people group in the USA, and that we can have a huge effect on our society. I am concerned about the hypocrisy in that statement; if we are the largest people group, then we can have a huge effect on our economy etc, if our leaders would encourage us to do so, by living biblically and teaching us how to do so! But, I wondered what your thoughts on it are, sorry to have rambled.

First 7 chapters
| Posted On: 06/04/08 09:30:38 PM |

I have loaned all my copies of PDL out so I can't review it on the spot but the first 7 or 8 chapters as I recall were written to unbelivers (leading them to a decision for Christ)and then the rest of the book described a believers work within the greater body (the church). (I thought some of those chapters were alittle drawn out since my personal ministry isn't within the actual walls of the church) The very first words hits like a hammer between the eyes, though, of most in our "me culture"..."It's not about YOU" and goes on to explain how it's all about HIM. I was able to purchase (in quanity) the first 7 chapters in a booklet form from the PDL website and passed them out to my unsaved friends. I thought it was pretty plain and powerful in explaining our need to to make a decision to surrender our lives to Christ. As I said I have given all my copies away....I will check it out again. I think Rick Warren was noncombative and quiet and actually listening to the comments made. As a man of God I am sure he will condiser the arguments made on his knees before God and will do what's right. Did we hear this much fuss about "The Prayer of Jabez" which I thought was off the wall?

- It IS about YOU!
| Posted On: 06/05/08 04:51:23 AM | | Age 52, SOUTH AFRICA | Regardless of how Rick Warren starts his book, everything is focussed on YOU. Even to the extent that he tells YOU how to pray to become a member of God's family with no mention of repentance, the cross, atonement, forgiveness, faith........
The Message interpretation, of which he is so fond (it is not a translation - even according to Eugene Petersen himself) continuously twists verses so that the focus is on YOU. Click here to reply to this post
- I agree
| Posted On: 07/13/08 03:14:56 PM | | Age 41, ENGLAND | Yes, my thoughts exactly. It is a very man centered book.
I also think that we have laid ourselves open to this type of deception by not grounding our churches in fundamental doctrine. I know christians in their mid and latter years who cannot and will not see the error taught by this man. All they needed to do was examine and research the quotes to see that Warren is decidedly wrong on the most basic of christian doctrines - the gospel. We must defend scripture and the Lord to the very last irrespective of the popularity of Satan`s latest attack against the glory of God. Click here to reply to this post
