As president, John adams pushed through the Senate the Treaty of Tripoli in 1797.
In the text, Article 11 states that America is not in any way a Christian nation.
He and the entire Senate acknowledge having read every clause of the document, so that there could be no reason for him to have missed that statement denying a Christian founding.

The founders were afraid of pure democracy

The founder's fear of democracy is apparent in their literature. They were not fighting for democracy. They were fighting for liberty. Jefferson said: "Liberty is unobstructed action according to our will within limits drawn around us by the equal rights of others. Democracy is two wolves and sheep voting to decide what's for lunch." Jefferson would never have entertained the idea of unlimited majority rule. Jefferson was afraid that a pure democratic government would begin making exceptions to the principles (God's laws) that make liberty possible: "A departure from principle in one instance becomes a precedent for a second; that second for a third; and so on, till the bulk of society is reduced to mere automatons of misery, to have no sensibilities left but for sinning and suffering." We must not allow political law to overide God's natural law. George Cancilla
