Rick Warren at National Cathedral: Mainline and Evangelical Churches Should Reconcile
PAGE: 1 2

Emergent church = liberalism
Posted On: 01/30/08 07:02:39 PM Age 46, AZ
I cannot help but see the blaring similarities between Warren's brand of Christianity and liberalism in our national politics. Rather than the mainline (dead) churchs changing to become more like Gospel centered evangelical churchs, those of us who rely on Scripture alone are called to compromise the Truth. Similarly, liberals call for bi-partisanism from conservatives when in reality it's just conservatives compromising their principals. Thank you Ingrid for standing for the Truth.

Rick Warren
Posted On: 01/30/08 02:21:10 PM Age 74, MN
When I first became acquainted with The Purpose Driven Life, it looked fairly good--not great, but okay. I viewed as a book you might use as a side study book with the Bible. I sat through one of the study groups, but the more I read, the more I wondered. The first line in the book is "It's not about you." But everything else in the book is human-centered, not God centered. As I have watched Warren on the news in the past few years, it appears to be that he is moving more and more into humanism and farther and farther away from the worship of God. We are supposed to reconcile with churches that no longer preach the truth? What happened to "I am the way, the truth and the life. No man cometh unto the father except by me." There is one way. That way is Jesus. How can I fellowship with people who do not acknowledge who Jesus is? Mr. Warren seems to be losing his commitment to Christ--if he ever had it.

saved by a believing church
Posted On: 01/30/08 09:42:58 AM Age 47, FL
In retrospect, I know it was the Lord himself who went out and found me, a lost sheep. We lived in the Boston area and our episcopal church had aligned with the homosexual movement in May 2004. I had been saved only 3 years earlier(41yrs) when the ALPHA program came through. My repentance and salvation was not followed up with instruction,,,,I did not know why at the time, but I knew that something was missing in my church. Someone suggested I watch Pastor Charles Stanley early Sunday morning and I did. When I did, I immediately knew that I needed that kind our teaching in my new walk. Ultimately, we moved to Florida and to my suprise, there was a Mega Baptist church nearby. We ultimately joined and praise the Lord, finding this community of believers has truly been like finding the river of living waters after a lifetime in the desert. Since then, I have called several friends back home to tell them the good news. The news that Jesus lives in my new Church. To no avail. They do not hear. If God hadn't personally searched me out and placed his staff on me, guided me here, I would still be lost in the Episcopal church back in Mass. Praise the Lord!

Rick Warren has a good message
Posted On: 01/30/08 09:35:07 AM Age 60, TX
I can't speak for Rick Warren's intentions as I'm not in his head, but perhaps he didn't make himself clear on his stance on Jesus Christ and the atonement in this instance purposely. He was suggesting reconciliation, and beating them over the head with doctrine is not the way to accomplish that. His mission is "stealth" in that first he wins their confidence, and then he tells them the truth. Isn't that the way of the Gospel message? Didn't Jesus first FEED the people before he told them He was the way? Don't we befriend the lost, and show them the Gospel in our actions BEFORE we explain it? Rick Warren is not trying to be all things to all men, but he is trying to show the world that Christians are not flakes, hard-nosed, and self-righteous. We serve a God of love. Can't we get to know Rick Warren and learn of his motives before we call him an anti-Christ?

  1. No Steal Evangelism from the Apostles
    Posted On: 01/30/08 09:12:25 PMAge 41, WI
And where in the Scriptures would you find a biblical precedent for that kind of stealth evangelism? When God commands us to come out and be separate from those who have apostasized, what right do we have to go to such a church, call for evangelicals to join hands with such and lead millions into the belief that "we all share the same Savior?" With your kind of thinking, Christians could visit strip joints, brothels, and casinos and claim that you're just making friends first with everyone and then, after all the strippers have had lap dances with you, you can share the gospel down the road. The truth is, you'd have no business in these joints in the first place. The time for excuse making for Rick Warren, as the article states, is over. There is no excuse for not thundering the truth of God's Word to those lost people in the pews at National Cathedral. Anything less is denial of Christ.

    1. What did Jesus do?
      Posted On: 01/31/08 12:56:14 PMAge 19, CA
Jesus hung out with tax collectors and prostitutes. It's not any sort of stealth evangelism to go to the sick in spirit and evangelize; rather, it what we are COMMANDED to do! If certain churches need Christ, who else can bring it to them besides the churches who know Christ? Christians should go to the homes of the downtrodden (not necessarily strip joints, since most men, as you pointed out, could/would have ulterior motives for going) and should have no qualms about giving the love of God to anyone--even other churches. So to say we have no business in "those places" is to say that Jesus should never have eaten with "sinners"

      1. JESUS DID NOT HANG OUT WITH SINNERS
        Posted On: 01/31/08 07:02:35 PMAge 64, OH
Jesus did NOT hang out with prostitutes and tax collectors. He was accused of such but was not guilty of what they accused Him of. Would you also agree with the pharisees when they accused the disciples of stealing the body of Jesus from the grave. Jesus did not hang out with anyone but called them to follow Him. Matt 9:9As Jesus went on from there, he saw a man named Matthew sitting at the tax collector's booth. "Follow me," he told him, and MATTHEW GOT UP AND FOLLOWED HIM. 10While Jesus was having dinner at Matthew's house, many tax collectors and "sinners" came and ate with him and his disciples. 11When the Pharisees saw this, they asked his disciples, "Why does your teacher eat with tax collectors and 'sinners'?" 12On hearing this, Jesus said, "It is not the healthy who need a doctor, but the sick. 13But go and learn what this means: 'I desire mercy, not sacrifice.'[a] For I have not come to call the righteous, but sinners." - Jesus did call the sick to follow Him. But when they followed Jesus they were changed forever. Mary Magdalene was a prostitute when Jesus called her; but she repented and was no longer a prostitute when she followed Jesus. She left her sin just as Matthew got up and left his booth. Jesus did not hang out with sinners but sinners who met Jesus were changed forever and followed Him. Matthew was killed preaching the gospel. Mary spent all that she had on her savior and Lord. Jesus got very angry when he seen the misuse of the Temple and said that the Temple was a house of prayer and chased the sinners out with a whip. Jesus did not wink at sin or make crude jokes about it. The wages of sin are death and Jesus was so serious about this fact that he died for the sin of those who were willing to repent and leave their life of sin. There is no way that i could go into a strip club, I would stand outside and preach the gospel. Lou

  2. We are too quick to judge motives
    Posted On: 01/30/08 01:05:43 PMAge 19, CA
I wholeheartedly agree. Why should we be so afraid of welcoming these denominations in with open arms, just as Jesus welcomes anyone who seeks Him? If other denominations preach a false gospel, we need to merge them with a denomination that is Christ-centered; ostracizing them is not the solution. After all, we are told in James that "whoever turns a sinner from the error of his way will save him from death and cover over a multitude of sins."

    1. FEW FIND LIFE
      Posted On: 01/31/08 07:15:38 PMAge 64, OH
You are preaching a false gospel yourself friend. Do you think all will be welcomed by Jesus into heaven. Jesus said 13"Enter through the narrow gate. For wide is the gate and broad is the road that leads to destruction, and many enter through it. 14But small is the gate and narrow the road that leads to life, and only a few find it. -- It is few that will be welcomed into heaven by Jesus. The Way, The Truth, and The Life
Posted On: 01/30/08 09:10:06 AM Age 55, LA
It is amazing to me that people who call themselves by His name, still don't know Him. What I mean, is that if we believe what Jesus said about Himself, we would not even entertain mixing with other religious beliefs who defy Him. We would believe that there is only one way to the Father, and that is through Him and the price He payed for us to be reconciled with the Father. We would take it to heart when He said not to be unequally yoked with unbelievers, and we would preach Jesus Christ and Him crucified so that all would believe and be saved. I pray for Rick Warren that the Lord would open His eyes and reveal Himself to him;that the scales would fall from his eyes. That is the prayer I prayed for my husband whenver he was looking to the world and himself for answers. He is now in the Lord and growing. Yes, we should contend for the faith, but we should also pray for God to reveal Himself through His Son to those who are in darkness. Will you join me, brothers and sisters-the "church" of God who the gates of hell WILL NOT prevail against? If we lift Rick up to the Lord, I will stand back in faith to see the glory of the Lord revealed.

Rick Warren at the National Cathedral

Perhaps Rick needs to reread his own book and remember it's not about us it's all about Him. Or perhaps he should read his other book that says the purpose of God's church is to wholeheartedly obey God's Great Commandment so that God will allow us to join Him in fulfilling His Great Commission which is the very reason that the mainline churches are dying they have left their first love and abandoned God's purpose.

Who is Rick Warren?
Posted On: 01/29/08 10:34:42 PM Age 61, MO
Rick Warren and the rest of the postmodern, emergent church leaders are more concerned with public morality, social responsibility, and size of church membership than they are with the teachings of Jesus Christ. They put on a pretty good show, but I fear that they are the ones Jesus was addressing when He said: "Ye are they which justify yourselves before men; but God knows your hearts: for that which is highly esteemed among men, is abomination in the sight of God." (Luke 16:15). These guys want unity and peace at any expense. They are complacent about Biblical doctrines: they aren't interested in Truth, but only cooperation. They are quick to compromise Biblical doctrine when it interferes with political or cultural loyalties. Warren and his colleagues are hard at work creating a super church that will incorporate people, money, and clergy from all denominations. Unfortunately for them, God will not be impressed by their magnificence and multitudes. George Cancilla
