heresy, his knowledge is based on his opinion, he proves that by saying, "I think". The word of God is crystal clear on judgment, heaven, and hell. This man appears clueless as to the eternal destination of one's soul after departing from this life. Again, if he were born again, he would understand these things, for they are basic essential Christian doctrine. Romans 8:9 says this, 'You, however, are controlled not by the sinful nature, but by the Spirit, IF THE SPIRIT OF GOD LIVES IN YOU. And if anyone does NOT have the Spirit of Christ, HE DOES NOT BELONG TO CHRIST.' The Spirit reveals the truth of God's word to those who belong to Christ...

I would say that Doug, like many before him, has changed scripture to suit his agenda. I think he knows the truth on a subconscience level but refuses to accept it because he enjoys his seeming importance and notoriety. So yes, sadly he is heretical.

Heretic....another guy trying to please the unsaved masses by creating his own gospel. We all know about God's warning to those who try to change his Word....

Heretic or not? YES - Heretic.
I was listening again last night (call me a masochist) and I caught this little line of his after you asked where you would go after you die if you were a good buddhist. He said the funeral home but after that "I don't know I supposed it depends on where you were being born."
That had to be a reference to reincarnation. Now was he being facetious or does he really believe that buddhists ARE reincarnated just because they may believe that?
I would take this opportunity to remind everyone that Solomon's Porch where Doug Pagitt "pastors" (cough cough) is an EVANGELICAL COVENANT church. The Evangelical Covenant is currently steeped in:
1. Emergent
2. Purpose Driven and other church growth nuttiness
3. social justice/Christian marxism
4. contemplative prayer and mysticism/yoga
There is nearly no discernment left in the denomination. "Conservative" Christians still in the individual congregations are slumbering away and so naive that they put up with anything, under the cover of 'Christian liberty' as long as it's said nicely enough. They've been gradually deprived of the truth for so long that they can't recognize the lack anymore. And the leadership is so well-versed in studied ambiguity that they are pro's at keeping the conservative members placated enough to keep coming and filling the offering plate.

While I am not an expert by any stretch of the imagination, I would say Doug Pagitt is committing heresy. I think about the Mormons and how they teach that there is no hell and that everybody just goes to a different level of heaven when they die. If that is considered heresy, which I believe it is, then I think we have to say Doug Pagitt is also a heretic, at least for what he said on WOTM radio earlier in the week.
Mike....in Texas =)

Heretic; failure to recognize and believe the Word of God; redefining words (damnation, judgment), etc.

Heretic,
He denies Christ as the only path to salvation.
I pray he repents.

Well, I've kind of been wondering what the whole "Emergent Church" thing was all about, but when I heard Doug Pagitt make clear his position on what a majority of Christians would consider orthodox Christianity, I felt like I was watching the scene in one of the films from the "Alien" trilogy where the symbiote breaks out of the poor guys stomach.
There is NO WAY that guys philosophy is in any way aligned with orthodox Christianity.
(Heaven's not an actual place??? That's probably news to God!)
If you have a whole hour to listen, make sure you have a cup of coffee and a notebook with pencil handy.
(The link to the edited version wasn't working when I clicked it so I just clicked the second link to the podcast and listened to the whole thing. It was worth it.)

| Posted On: 10/29/07 10:47:26 AM | | Age 50, OK | You have highlighted my very concern about this article/interview. While DP's comments are clearly NOT in keeping with God's Word, his comments are not indicative of the entire 'emergent' church. I am a fundamental, evangelical minister ordained in a holiness denomination. I am also in the process of planting a church that would to be catagorized most closely with the emerging church in keeping with it's approach to ministry. Illustration: In the 1968 Olympics, Dick Fosbury earned the gold medal in the high jump. His approach and methodology was unique at best. However, he did not lower the standard. In fact he raised the bar and set a new olympic record. What was so non-traditional is now the universal approach to the event. In the church, it is possible to alter the approach without lowering the standard. I beg of you; do not paint the emerging movement with such broad strokes as to destroy solidly foundationed ministries that are acting in obedience to reach a viturally untouched demographoic with Biblical discipliship. Perhaps it do some of you well to go back and read Luke 5:29-32. Click here to reply to this post

"I have no idea what you mean" kinda sums up Doug Pagitt's views.
If he were "saved" he would be considered a heretic.
He needs to repent and turn toward the Savior.
I guess he considers "damnation" only applicable to those things in the world contrary to God's ways, but not including any people.
Those quotes from Scripture are just "metaphors" for Doug.
He seriously needs Jesus, not his "understanding."
