The writer of this article says: "We are commanded in Scripture to be holy in our conversation, as that which becomes a child of God."
If one keeps that in mind and peruses her previous articles, they'll quickly see that she doesn't adhere to that standard herself. While she may abstain from swear words, she has not witheld damaging words from her fellow believers- quite umbecoming to a child of God.

Great article, Ingrid. You have written about something I wanted to tackle sometime, but you've done it better than I could. My idea, though, is related. If one thinks about vulgar words, they almost all relate to either defaming our God, or to reducing human private activity to the level of animals. Whose initiation is this? The enemy's, of course--and the fact that such words (in local languages) are universal, is even more to the point. It's the demonic realm prompting us to be our worst, in moments of quick impulse. Do we need any clearer proof of the existence and influence of our enemy? Just my thoughts...
Good job, and God bless you!

God is holy but men are making Him a good ole boy. What most will miss because they dont know is that we must approach God as holy and with reverance. To draw close to God is to learn this. Men are thinking about how to get all saved. O that they would see our Lords words as He never acted in a way that the world would think is cool . He always feared God and always treated His Father as holy. Men will say o get over it but let them seek God and ask Him . To even act like one is saying the f word is telling of a worldly heart, the bible says to stay away from even the appearance of sin, filthy mouths are now funny but not to a Holy God. . Please read 2 cor. 7:1. so sad, so sad...

Thank you.
I have been a christian for only 4 years. I grew up laughing at and with George Carlin and others much like him. One of the biggest changes in my life is my new-found distaste for the vulgarity in this world, but I could never find the words for it. You expressed it eloquently and well grounded in the truth of God, and for that I'm greatful.
Again, thank you.

This author is absolutely right on!!!
I address this issue when I present my Christian Fundamentals of Leadership which I do every two weeks during the summer at The Summit Ministries. I also discuss it in places like churches and Sunday schools. I have seen teen age boys wearing baseball hats with filthy language sewn on to their hats with none of the church staff doing anything about it. When I have confronted people like this sometimes I get, "I am free in Christ to do what I like." By the way, this is not a new phenomenom. The event I spoke of above took place nearly 30 years ago. However, while that was a single incident, it has become pervasive.
Again, I say, Ingrid has it absolutely right and I hope she keeps writing about the issue!

It was very refreshing for me to read this article. I feel it is a very accurate account of what has taken place in our society since the "free love" era of the 60's. I was afraid that I was the only one that felt this way about it and the only one that cared about the downward spiral of our society. Thank you, Ingrid.

It seems that Christians are really out there with language usage that is meant to prove that we can be cool and be Christian too. Not cool in a good, clean way, but cool as in culturally cool. Unfortunately, as the author points out, our language has become filthy . Our culture has become a place for filthy ideas, language and images to be painted as desirable.
Having a teenage daughter, who was home schooled, but not sheltered, we find the need to give her the true inferences and inuendo behind some words commonly used by Christians . When we tell her, she seems a little shocked to think that these respectable folks would even want to be associated with the images these words promote. The look on her face when the light comes on is amazing. We need to tell her so she won't fall into the blind habit of repeating a speech pattern that is vulgar.Somtimes I frett at finding the right words to describe the slang. I don't want to talk about some of this stuff. But, I would betray her to let her fall into such sin. Better me give the explaination than the world. Children repeat what they hear blindly often with no concept of of how far those words reach.
It is my understanding that the movie review boards that be have now decided to add a new list of words to acceptable in PG and PG-13 movies. Supposedly , these words are perfectly acceptable for anyone. I read a few and I would have had my mouth washed out with soap had I used them as a child. I was from a secular home. They are not acceptable among godly Christians who are seeking to please the Lord with a good testimony of Him. They are perfectly acceptable by the lost, whom many Christians are living to please. Suprisingly enough, Christian reviews give some movies using these word a " thumbs up", seemingly overlooking the language as not a reason to exclude such entertainment from our choices.
Recently, I heard a pastor remind us that in the begining we make our choices but in the end , our choices make us. Our choices are making our culture.
If faith comes by hearing and hearing by the word of God, can you imagine what comes by the hearing of some of these words over and over? I think we are seeing it. We are becoming hardened to the very things that offend God as if that is not important. ( I hope He doesn't return the favor.) Maybe we have a responsibility to explain the vulgar nature of certain words and expressions to Christians using them , in a loving way. They may have been programmed into using words as if they don't matter. The Word of God is very important. Proverbs says that rightly placed words are beautiful. Our Lord certainly created language to be beautiful and to reveal His truths and not our lack of purity.
May God reach deeply into our hearts with some serious reflection about how we decieve ourselves and others when we are not careful with words.
God Bless,
Shirley Skidmore

As the late comedian/entertainer Steve Allen said: (they are just) "vulgarians entertaining barbarians".

Ingrid,
Would you characterize Chuck Swindoll as a "vulgarian", along the same lines as George Carlin? Also, would you say that the term "fanny shaking" and mocking an African praise group with "Holeh, Holeh, Holeh" are, if not vulgar, then at least beyond the pale for a Christian commentator?
Love your show. Keep up the good work!
