If he wants to say that they used words like that during Jesus' time, show me BCV, as my pastor would say. (Book, chapter, verse). No where in the red letters do I see words that I would not use today. We are to be in the world, not of it. The Bible is the word of God, it is Truth. If that is scary, then maybe he has some soul searching to do?

Well, Jesus called the religious leaders of his day a brood of vipers. Pretty offensive. One could argue that his offensiveness to the religious leaders is what caused him to be crucified (noting that obviously it was God's intention).
And while the letters aren't in "red" ... would this person be comfortable talking in front of their church about the prophet's condemnation that Israel was like a whore with her legs spread wide for every passerby? I sure wouldn't. Pretty graphic language / imagery. Are we even comfortable with it on a blog? Will this even get past the filters and get posted? Yet it's "biblical". We can skip those verses and just talk about the "nice" and "clean" stuff ... but then we're doing an injustice to what God is communicating to us.
I'm not arguing that Tony Jones should have / shouldn't have used that language. I don't know the context. But the bible isn't as Puritan of a book as some would try to make it.
I do concur that we should live Eph 4:29 ... but note it defines what wholesome is ... a word that builds up. As a male in our culture sometimes when other guys say "insulting" things to me ... I am "built up" because I know it's kidding and that it demonstrates that they really like me. A legalist would call that wrong ... but I'm convinced that God wouldn't. This is inexcusable. Profanity is not merely determined by a given culture. A word or phrase is considered profane because it is ultimately blasphemous, falling into these categories:
* It uses God's name in vain.
* It demeans the human body (God's creation).
* It demeans a bodily function (God's creation).
* It demeans sexuality or a sexual function (God's gift and creation).
* It demeans a person (made in God's image).
While we see overlap, these are general categories. There is no justification for using profanity. Tony Jones is woefully wrong.

No excuse for the "F" word. None. Zero. If we want to be culturally relevant, we can certainly do it without that word or any other profanity. Matthew 12:34 says "You brood of vipers! How can you speak good, when you are evil? For out of the abundance of the heart the mouth speaks." Another way to say it is that dirty words come from a dirty heart. I am not questioning anyone's salvation status, but rather acknowledging the bad fruit. Press On, Darren

So, I don't think the problem is initially the use of the word so much (though I abhore it) but the mindset of a "Christian" who would seek to offend by using such language in the first place. Perhaps we should be praying for his salvation... Click here to reply to this post

We are now discussing whether we should pray for the salvation of the National Coordinator of the "Christian" organization Emergent Village. A man who is currently studying for his doctorate through "Christian" Princeton University and who is also a published "Christian" author through "Christian" Zondervan publishing. Tony Jones is also a man who speaks to and teaches "Christian" youth ministers how to share "Christianity" in an alleged postmodern world. And this man might not even be a "Christian." Perhaps people might want to keep this in mind as we in discernment ministry alert the Body of Christ concerning wolves like Tony Jones. Based on the above, instead of attacking us, I'd offer it would be more profitable to finally start questioning the discernment of your own $evangelical$ leaders. Click here to reply to this post
