As a born-again Christian, I would like to make the following observations: 1. The Bible is no more a biology textbook than it is a calculus textbook. Therefore, to appeal to the Bible to make a scientific proof is not good logic. 2. Galatians 5 makes it clear that there are sins of the flesh. Is "flesh" not "genetic"? 3. I think that a genetic "gene" is Biblically possible, just as many Christians think that an "old earth" is Biblically possible (such as Phillip Johnson author of "Darwin On Trial".) Furthermore, I think that a "gay gene" would STRENGTHEN the Gospel in that it simply proves that we cannot avoid sin. It points to the need for a Savior even more! We can't help it! God calls something sin, then builds it into us so that we cannot help but sin. Just because there may be a natural component to sin doesn't make sin "non-sin"; it means we do not have the capacity to avoid it without neing born again. Then we are to "crucify the flesh with its passions and desires"...the natural man hasn't the desire nor the ability to do this without the Savior and the indwelling of the Holy Spirit. Instead of hiding our heads in the sand through denial, we had better wake up, be good Christians and love God with our MINDS so that we can be prepared to give a Biblical response to the possibility of a "gay gene". Remember, at one time the Church thought that the Sun revolved around the Earth.

God call something sin and then builds it into us so that we can't help but sin? That is totally unscriptural. What about James 1:13-14 "And remember, no one who wants to do wrong should ever say, 'God is tempting me.' God is never tempted to do wrong, and he never tempts anyone else either. Temptation comes from the lure of our own evil desires..." God created man perfect. Adam walked in perfect harmony with God, unbroken fellowship. But he chose to sin. The Bible clearly teaches that sin entered the world through one man and death through sin, and in this way death came to all me because all sinned. God did not "design" sin into our genetic code. We need to search the scriptures for answers not make up our own answers. That said - we all have certain tendencies. Greed or pornography may be my issues and your may be drugs and alcohol. Those things become sinful when we act upon them, rather than crucify them. What I don't know is if these "tendencies" are genetic or not. But even if they are, they are not designed by God. They are the result of the fall.

First point: we inherited Adam's sin, and according to the Book of Genesis chapter 3 and Romans chapter 5, because of this inheritance, we paid two consequences -- one is spiritual and the other physical. Spiritual death (separation from God), and physical death (to dust we will return). As a consequence, God allowed the sin that we inherited through Adam to negatively affect our physical genes by the development of "timers" that cause changes like wrinkles, white hair, and general deterioration that leads to death. This same sin is also the cause of genetic disorders like Muscular Dystrophy, which lead to premature death. Second point: God "wrote" glands into our genetic blueprint that were designed to produce pheromones that attract members of the opposite sex to each other (ultimately for procreation). God also "wrote" sensory organs that are able to receive, interpret, and act on these pheromones. My conclusion in the form of a question: if we agree that the consequence of sin negatively affected our genes in a physical manner (death and genetic disorders), and we agree that God "wrote" genes into our genetic blueprint, how can we completely rule out the possibility of sin negatively affecting the genes that produce the glands that produce the pheromones, and sin negatively affecting the genes that produce the sensory receptors of those pheromones? "IF" a gay gene was identified and confirmed, this would only prove that homosexuals are "born that way," but it would not give them any justification to continue living their lifestyle. Why? Everyone was born sinners (Psalm 51) because of Adams sin. And, the result of their condition was not caused or intended by God, but acquired through the consequence of sin. Bottom line, practicing homosexuality, like other sexual sins (fornication, adultery, pornography, etc.), is sinful.

There is no justification of sin before a holy, righteous and just God. Yet the continued quest in hope of finding a "Gay-gene" fuels and reinforces the sinners self justification. "It's not my fault" "I am a victim of my genetic make up." "By the grace of god I am what I am." Such a sin gene would have to be placed in Adam prior to his act of sin and would thereby make God the author of sin. (otherwise how could Adam be predisposed to sin?) Sin exists outside of and apart from genes and genetic markers. So the argument here is over an effect and not the cause. The effect of sin is a contaminated genetic makeup, to say anymore is to open the door for self justification and sin-based behavorial reinforcement.

Let's agree that because of sin, Adam and his descendants (you and I included) have within each of our genetic codes, timers that set off certain functions -- one of which sets off the process of gradual decay and ultimately the complete cesation of the function of the cells that the genes control. Do you still believe sin doesn't cause genetic abnormalities that weren't intended by God? Furthermore, to this day, despite millions and millions of dollars that are spent on research, scientists remain baffled on the idea of reversing the process of death in our genetic code. Because according to the book of Ecclesiastes, God appointed a day for "EVERY" man (yes, every one that will ever exist) to die, so you can rest assure that God will never go back on His word by allowing man to make this determination through genetic re-engineering.

If a gay person says, "It's not my fault, I was born that way," I can reply, "According to Psalm 51 and Romans 5, it's not my fault that I was conceived in sin and condemned to hell before I was even born." But this doesn't mean that I can continue living in my sinful lifestyle (fornication, drunkardness, etc.). See my point?

I never indicated that the possibility of a genetic defect was the cause of homosexuality. I indicated that no one can rule out the "possibility" of sin (the sin that entered Adam and mankind, which is the cause of a genetic defect in the thyroid gland called hyperthyroidism), causing a defect in the Hypothalamus and Pituitary glands -- which lead to sin. However, this does not justify ANY sin because only the blood of Jesus can do that. Homosexuals, regardless of whether there is a gay gene or not, still need salvation as does any other type of sinner who isn't born again. This information would not encourage homosexuals to use the gay gene as a means to justify their lifestyle because the Bible clearly indicates that homosexuals will not inherit the Kingdom. A genetic disorder called affective spectrum disorder may link 14 different genetic mental disorders that fall under Anxiety disorders, e.g. Bipolar disorder and clinical depression caused by a chemical imbalance in the brain, or more specifically, a deminished output of serotonin that is below that of the average person. This has been proven. Depression can lead to sinful behaviors like substance abuse and self-destructive behaviors. Aren't these behaviors just as sinful as homosexual acts? Again I say, the sin we inherited from Adam, which caused the genetic disorders in humanity, can lead to sinful behavior. Charles Spurgeon suffered severe clinical depression to the point that after a sermon he collapsed from an episode of massive depression and had to be carried out of the church building. According to one of his books, this condition caused him to doubt God, and even his own salvation at times. Satan used this condition to mess with Charles Spurgeon -- as, by the way, the messenger from hell buffetted the Apostle Paul.

You wrote, "1. The Bible is no more a biology textbook than it is a calculus textbook." Well, I certainly hope the Bible isn't a biology textbook because we'd have to rewrite (correct) it every year! BUT where the Bible touches on biology IT IS TRUE. Where it touches on geology IT IS TRUE. Where it touches on anthropology IT IS TRUE. Where it touches on cosmology IT IS TRUE. So no, the Bible is not primarily a science textbook BUT wherever it touches on science IT IS TRUE! The scripture is the infalliable, inerrant, and all-sufficient Word of God!

I absolutely agree. You either believe God's word or you don't. God created Adam (man) in His image, then He created Eve (woman). They fit together so perfectly that children were born. It's that simple. IN HIS IMAGE!!! A man and a woman. Then God tells us that it is sin for it to be any other way. You either believe the entire Bible or you don't. I do believe that the Bible is God's word and I believe it entirely. God gave us such simple rules and the world wants to play "God" and try to find ways to change the rules. And let's not forget that Satan thinks he'll win. But WE KNOW WHO WINS!!!!!!!!

Satan's obviously going to win. Satan has the Muslims, Jews, Mormons, Scientologists, Budhists, Atheists, Gays, Drug Addicts, theifs, women, murderers...etc. Not much left for Heaven after all of the "sinners" are filtered out. All of you perfect souls will be pretty lonely, but certainly satisfied in knowing that you were right. What is Heaven exactly. What goes on there? Are all of your Earthly desires fullfilled? and if so, then would a Gay man who supresses his desire on Earth, have all of the gay sex he desires in Heaven? and if not, then why would he want to go to Heaven?

1 Corinthians 1:18, "For the message of the cross is foolishness to those who are perishing, but to us who are being saved it is the power of God." Through this power of God, born again Christians experience the inexpressible joy and love of God's spirit manifested in their lives. Christians aren't perfect, but in God's eyes we are perfect through Christ's atonement on the cross. When we were born again, we were baptized into Christ, and our lives hidden in Him. Colossians 3:3 "...your life is hidden with Christ in God." This doesn't mean God doesn't know about the sins we commit. Just because you can't see the food you just ate for lunch, doesn't mean you don't know what's in your belly. We Christians experience consequences for the sins we commit while we are on earth -- but the eternal penalty for our sins has been paid by Christ's sacrificial death on the cross. God is not as concerned about our physical lives as He is concerned about our spiritual/eternal lives.

I am far from "perfect". I don't think that I am or claim to be. You are totally missing a very important characteristic that God has given each person. A free will to CHOOSE between sin or no sin. Everyone has the "nature" to sin or only think of one's own pleasure, but we each have to make choices of whether we will sin or not. It is incredibly simple. WE must make the CHOICES!!! Unfortunately much of mankind doesn't take responsibility for their choices or actions. God wants us to be accountable for our actions. It's much easier to blame someone else, isn't it??????? The Bible clearly states WHO WILL WIN THE WAR!!!!! It just looks like Satan is winning. Do you believe the Bible or not?? Once again, another CHOICE that only we are responsible for.

I must also add that I am not gay. I believe the Bible is full of good ideas of how to live life, but is in no way fully fact, as many people interpret it is.

Well, before you get the wrong idea about me. I honestly live a good life. Not sinless, but also not very sinful. The obvious answer to nearly any logical debate on Christianity is "free choice" which seems to be a solid defense against any atheist attack on the religion, so I cannot possible try to argue free choice. But what happened to all of the people who died before the existence of Christianity, and more importantly, before Jesus opened the gates of Heaven? what choice and guidance did they have? Also, I feel that God created man to be imperfect, and with that comes poor decisions. So, how can God penalize those who made "mistakes"? Is Dr. Frankenstein guilty or is his monster totally to blame? God, being omniscient had the forsight to know that man would do horrible things, so isn't God to blame. and I ask again... What is Heaven? Is Heaven a person's Utopia, and what if a gay man supresses his homosexuality and lives a good enough life on Earth. Is that man's heaven going to allow him to fullfill his homosexual desires? and if not, is that really a Utopia for this man?

Titus chapter 3 verse 4-5 reads: We were not saved by our righteous acts (living a good life), but by the mercy of Christ. In the book of Isaiah we read that our most righteous acts are like filthy (I'll spare the exact Hebrew word and definition for the sake of appropriateness) rags. Paul refused to describe what Heaven was like after returning from a visit to the third Heaven (where God is), because he thought there were no words that could adequately describe how good it was. He thought using the words that came even remotely clost would only serve as an injustice. Based on a couple experiences I've had in the last five years, I can attest to the inexpressible sensations that can't be described with words. I am a simple Christian, nothing fancy, nothing apparently different than any other Christian. God was gracious in helping me, who once doubted God's existence, experiencing just a token of what is in store for me when I enter into Heaven. I did nothing to earn this salvation, it was a free gift when I deserved punishment -- that's grace. All you have to do is trust that Jesus died for your sins, confess your sins to Him, ask for forgiveness and declare Him as your Lord and Savior. Leave the rest to the Holy Spirit and you will know what awaits you when you enter into Heaven. Let me just say, you'll be so convinced that Heaven will be the best thing you could ever imagine that the question of what Heaven will be like will never enter your mind again. Try it -- would it hurt anything?

Yes, a closer reading of these is in order. I think the christian community has accepted the media hype at face value. Al Mohler affirms that there is currently no scientific evidence of a gay gene and that even if there were, it would not change the fact that God's condemnation of sin is not determined by science, but by the word of God. I personally see nothing wrong, unbiblical or unchristian about his comments. Furthermore, some who identified themselves as Christians spoke of homosexuality and homosexuals with hate-filled language that literally made me shudder. Do we really love sinners? Do we not understand ourselves to be sinners saved by grace? - Al Mohler

It really boils down to choice! We have a choice; to love, honor and serve our Lord; to love our brothers and sisters! All through Scripture, it came down to choice. From Adam and Eve, to us. Do we accept Jesus Christ as Lord and personal Savior? We have a choice! Every one of the examples, choice! So, are they midful of 2 Timothy 4:3 & Romans 1:18-19! Let's pray for those who are lost. That the Holy Spirit will convict them of their sin, so they can share in the promised inheritance, as Christ says in John 14:2; "for I go and prepare a place for you! See you there! In Christ!

Steve Camp has completely twisted Mohler's words... what an embarassment. Camp rails on and on about sin as though Mohler has ever said anything contrary to the biblical view of sin. Mohler's point is that the Fall affected the genome, too. Camp refuses to address this, instead prattling on and on as he attacks a strawman. Camp also does no justice to the sheep experiment, instead belitting as he assumes that his view of scriptures rules out the research's conclusion.

WHAT!? "The fall effected the Genome?" Are you serious? So God allowed the fall to effect our genetic makeup with the hopes that one day by our own brilliance we would discover how invade the human embryo in order to change it back to his created design...???? That is too ridiculous for Steve or anyone to waste time responding to. That is a messed up Worldview and theology.

Let's agree that the consequence of sin was death (both spiritual and physical). There is an unknown process in the genes of every cell that, at an appointed time that only God knows, ceases to function and the result is death. Do you still believe sin doesn't cause genetic abnormalities? And by the way, medical science has not made any progress, none whatsoever, in reversing the process of dying. Many have tried gene therapy and re-engineering, but the researchers remain perplexed. And don't expect them to make any progress -- God won't allow them the opportunity. Only God's in charge of appointing a time to die. If not, He's a failure. And we know that is not possible. And God won't allow any man to play God, unless it is in God's will (He's in control regardless).

I was perplexed, to say the least, to see "Pre-Trib/Pre-Mill-Gene" listed amongst the many others in this article. Perplexed, and saddened. A proper reading of Scripture (using an exegetical hermeneutic) clearly shows that the Rapture will indeed be both Pre-Tribulational and Pre-Millennial. I agree that we should not be labeling sin as being genetic (gay-gene, etc.) - and including in this list the millions of believers who properly understand when the Rapture will take place is unfortunate at best & ludicrous at worst.

I realize Steve Camp honestly believes he truly understands what Dr. Mohler has said, but I don't think that is the case. Dr. Mohler's point is that some people may indeed have a genetic predisposition toward homosexual TEMPTATION. There is clearly a difference between being tempted and being guilty of sin when it comes to homosexuality, (as is true for all sins) though it is not always easy to identify where that line is. Our unqiue genetic makeup and environmental background make all of us more likely to be tempted in some areas than others. Dr. Mohler clearly believes that each person has the responsibility to, by the grace of God, resist that temptation and he or she stands guilty before for failing to do so.

What is your point? Do you think that God is actually the kind of God that would genetically engineer people so that they could then be tempted beyond what they could bare? (1 Cor 10:13) This whole "genitic sin theory" is called an EXCUSE. If I can show that I am somehow not completely responsible for the way I think or feel then that gives me some justification for my actions. What a load of rubbish. How can people have such a messed up view of God.

I've heard the homosexual tendency/temptation compared to alcohlism, in this sense. Some people are more prone to abuse alcohol than others, but they are not "let off the hook" just because they have this weakness. In the same way, a heterosexual person is in no way justified for adultery just because his or her genes tend toward the opposite sex. And these biological, (and heterosexuality especially) and genetic in origin. Yet acting on these genetic dispositions is wrong! So what makes a homosexual tendency any different? Even if science does find a genetic cause for homosexuality, it is NOT an excuse. That behavior still must be avoided, just like the alcohol must not drink, and the heterosexual teen must not sleep with his/her date, no matter the biological/fleshly instincts! I see no reason to fear the discovery of a biological (possibly genetic) cause for the homosexual behavior. Any warm-blooded teenage boy can point to his hormones/genes to justify his passions. This is where Mohler has it exactly right. We must not condemn the homosexual for his temptations, anymore than we condemn a husband for being tempted by another woman. We must encourage them in the strength and blood of Christ to overcome/flee the temptation. The only sin is to act or meditate on these temptation. Let's please stop condemning people for their unique temptations. We all have temptations, and they can all be biological in origin (orginal sin, fallen flesh). All our sin is wicked, and the sin of pride is just as filthy to Christ as the perversion of sex. Praise the power of Christ who conquered sin and His Spirit who enables us to overcome.

Did you even read the comments you were responding to? The person stated straightforwardly that each person has a responsibility not to resist that temptation. He is not saying that if someone has a certain tendency then it exuses his behavior. Dr. Mohler did not exuse sin. Neither did the man you responded to. I suppose you have a natural inclination and attraction to people of the opposite sex. Does that mean its okay for you to engage in sinful sexual activity? HEAVENS NO! Then why would you suggest that to say someone has homosexual tendencies excuses their sin?

Here is a possible explination to why the genes carry evidence to support sin in genes or dna? Because they do and do respond to sin. What am I saying? Precisely this; generational curses or demon possession of the human body. Example is even looking into a person with very evil eyes! What do you see? Evil right. How can you see evil by looking at a physical eve ball? Because it was possessed by evil beings! Was that person at 4yrs old eminating evil eyes? Doubt it? Other examples are (some)issues of arthritic manifestations that happen quickly when someone persists in hating and not forgiving. I could say more but you get the idea. Whom you yield your members to; ie. evil, you will become the servant of. Romans. Yes spirit posession overlaying a physical body can alter genes, and pass on to the next generation or not, or even skip a generation much like eye color and recessive genes. Ask me how i know? Kevin

I subscribe to dr. Mohler's e-mail and blog, so I read his comments when they first came out.... is it me or am I the only one who fully understood the gist of what he was saying and the direction he wa taking his point of view? I am so perplexed that Mr. Camp as most learned musician and entertainer to be sure, would have the tamarrity to question Dr. Al Mohler, he should be ashamed and apologize to dr. Mohler. Before I explain how Mr. Camp and many of the bloggers got this wrong, let us set the record straight... Al Mohler is one of if not the most intelligent man we have within the Christian community. He reads over 7 books a week, on top of all the news papers, retaining all that he reads. His library ha sover 45,000 books in it and he has read each and everyone. he has been and still is an ambassador for Christ, Christians and the Southern Baptist Convention. He is as equally comfortable explaining science as he is Hebrew and Greek (does Steve Camp read hebrew and Greek), he is a scholar extrodinaire in History, be it church, biblical, ancient, US or world history, he is very learned. I share this as one who does not idiolize Dr. Mohler, but repsects very much the gifts and talents and anointing that God has bestowed on theis great leader. Here in very simple plain language from a layman is what Dr. Mohler was saying: The overview is that the homosexual community could very well be facing their very own ethical storm. On one hand they keep crying that they are born this was, after all, who would chose a lifestyle such as this. This is fact. Since they aregue that they are born this way and that there is a homosexual gene, then the dilemma for homosexuals would be IF this gene were to exist what ethics would be in place for parents to opt out of their child growing up a homosexual. In short, parents couls say, not my child, no way no how, fix him/her doctor so that they grow up heterosexual. Do you see the delima they would have? Now, as to the IF there is a gene; who wmongst us can rightly say that we know that God has not allowed such a gene to develop simply because of man's own sin nature? Please explain then how AIDS was developed when it was not around 50 years ago, or typhoid or such? How is it that we have been able to eradicate polio but now, it is making a comeback. My point is this, I, like Dr. Mohler do not believe that homosexuality is driven by a gene, or that they are born this way. I do think that some people are predesposed more so than others to gravitate to that lifestyle, but not brn that way. However, I will no more say I know how God operates when it comes to evolution of things such as illness, desiese, intelligence, etc. And the fact is, none of you do either. I think most of you posting have missed the whoel point of what he was saying because you are so clouded by absolute thinking that you know how God works..... MY ways are not your ways. Might I suggest that steve Camp and all of you piling on to something you know nothing about, back off and ask Dr. Mohler for his forgiveness. You totally missed the boat on this one. Since God is not the author of confusion guess who caused the confusion? Dr. Mohler. There are many brilliant people who read tons of books, retain what they read, write papers, and say wonderful things etc. This does not place them above being wrong. One example of this is the late scientist Carl Sagan who was an atheist, and there are many more such examples. Ministers, teachers, & preachers are called to one thing. Preach the Gospel for it is the power of God onto salvation, not to speculation or what- ifs, which only divert the attention away from the truly critical issue as is so evident in the huge amount of discussion surrounding Mohler's words. Let us attend to God's Word.

First, there was no need for the whole "my dad can beat up your dad" feel of the first half of your response. Steve Camp acknowledged and understands how brilliant Dr. Mohler is. Just because he is who he is does not mean that his ideas should not be questioned, in fact Dr. Mohler welcomed this in his articles. So I don't think there is any need to "be ashamed and ask forgivness." Second, it is obvious that what Dr. Mohler may have meant to say and what he actually communicated were completely different. It was not just Steve Camp that "supposedly" misunderstood him, but many other christian leaders, myself, and the media. So "if" this is one big misunderstanding then Dr. Mohler should retract his previous statements and clarify exactly what he beleives.
