Assumptions...

... First, I have read Rob Bell's books, i have listened to him live and on podcast and I have watched his Nooma Dvd's and have been inspired by them all.. so obviously I am writing from a "pro-Rob Bell" perspective if you like,
but...
I notice that where the pastor of Calvary Church said about 700-1000 people went with Rob, nowhere is there either a suggestion that those people were sent with Rob Bell, or that he actively "stole" them!
A teacher of the standard of Rob Bell will obviously attract people to follow him if he moves from one church and goes to start another...
what I find amazing is that he is so humble that he didnt expect anyone to follow him.. he expected a small number of people, as he says in Velvet Elvis if it was just his family and one other he would have been happy, but God inspired people to follow Rob Bell in those first few weeks and to get on board with his vision, and many people have been reached both in Michigan and all over the world as a result, and now God is using that teaching to inspire millions, so I think a harsh criticism of Rob Bell isnt called for.. and the way you are "gossiping" about him behind his back is no more or less sinful than IF the claims you make about Rob Bell are true.

Humm.. weather Rob intended make things seem one way or not i dont know i would have to talk to him. On the back of his book he says to "test it, probe it, do that to this book" so well done ken. Question Question... over all robs book made me ask a lot of Question which as a whole is great... and marketing an church yes it seems like he has "market nooma" very well... but maybe ppl can change there thinking... But the phrase stealing sheep is sad... are we all to be one body of christ, if God speaks to different induviuals better through different ppl then what is wrong with that? how can you steel sheep when we are all owned by one God, and we are all in one field... what more should i say... i am only 20 i have a lot to learn...

several defined means;
An indefinite but small number; some or a few
HOWEVER
small is a relitive term
if you are used to small churchs then 13 - 15 may seem like several...
but if your view is reaching the work 700 hundred ppl in nothing is sadly nothing.... in numbers anyways not as far as ppl themselves go. Click here to reply to this post

Sounds like, in general, you hear the "Judge not..." phrase used a lot. Maybe, even though it's not used in its literal correctness, you should take heed to the impression you give to others by your harsh critique of your opponent. I've read many of the authors you bash here and I would venture that they would not be so harsh to you as you are to them. They would likely accept your perspective graciously and hope to be extended the same grace. Oh, that we could all be so absolutely sure of ourselves as you are. But we are not. As fallable humans we seek advice on drawing nearer to God, on loving others better and serving our community. This is what I hear in the message you disdain. What I hear from you is divisiveness and a critical spirit and jealousy. It's not a Godly spirit...it's not good fruit.

...who cares? All this looks like is a jealous, bitter ranting. Can't you praise God for people being reached? I think you could find other things a lot more beneficial to the body of Christ to write about.

| Posted On: 11/23/06 04:55:34 PM | | Age 58, VA | What do you mean who cares, can't you praise God for the people who were reached? Rob Bell leads others to believe that God moved in such a mighty way that 1000 unexpected people found their way from the four corners of the surrounding area to his first service without a single flyer and that he reached them as you have implied for the Lord! Baloney. The real miracle is that a Pastor would let someone take 1000 of his members to go start another work for the Lord. Perhaps therein lies another telling story of Rob Bells motives. Did he steal those sheep or did the Pastor appove of that many leaving with Bell? Regardless, the whole CGM is noted for steeling sheep from other Pastor's pastures,creating transfer growth that far outweighs the growth from new conversions. And then the Pastors bragg about how big their congregations are! Jealousy and bitter ranting? I don't think so. Ken Silva is merely discerning good and evil and making known to those of us who are not impressed with numbers and all the other trappings of the CGM, Emergent Church, etc.,the truth and reality of what really lies under the surface of the facade and deception that people like Rob Bell operate under. Praise God for those who are being reached? I praise God that someone is not lying to me! Click here to reply to this post

Amazing! Do you actually think that a pastor "owns" the members of his congragation? If so then you are one sick Christian. When I read garbage like this it reminds me that being an athiest is the best way to be. Click here to reply to this post

do you know rob personally? have you walked a mile in his shoes? i guess he's doing a pretty good work because there are more than 1000 people going there now. why is there such a competition about church growth? "well they started with people" yes, and those people told more people and they saw 3000 in the first two weekends. Rob spoke on Leviticus that first year. have you ever heard him speak? he's amazing. his videos are amazing. i would never write an article like that.

Thank you Ken for an excellent review of the factual data regarding the claims of Bell. One obviously wonders if Bell can "stretch the truth" in this area, where else does he stretch the truth. While he claims marketing and church in the same sentence offends him - what other reason does he have for being less than forthright? It would seem selling the idea that his church grew from "several" to hundreds very quickly would be consistent with marketing techniques and the "spin" that we are subjected to in the secular media. If nothing else, we see that the truth itself is not held in significant esteem. This being the case in the matter of something that is obvious such as numbers, it also appears that this cavalier attitude towards the truth is found in that which eternally matters - and this is a great concern.
