Hate Crimes Legislation Could Be Voted On This Week
Legislation that would expand federal hate crime laws to include "sexual orientation" is or may soon be Amendment 2067 to the Defense Authorization bill (H.R. 1585). By including it as part of the troop funding bill, the supporters know that the President would be hard pressed to veto it.
This is the same legislation passed by the House this spring and listed as S. 1105, the "Matthew Shepard Local Law Enforcement Hate Crimes Prevention Act. If passed, it will silence free speech and end free expression of religion as it has done in other nations. This would happen under Title 18, Section 2 of the Criminal Code (a law already on the books) Here's the actual wording of Title 18, Part 1, Chapter 1, Section 2: "(a) Whoever commits an offense against the United States or aids, abets, counsels, commands, induces or procures its commission, is punishable as a principal. (b) Whoever willfully causes an act to be done which if directly performed by him or another would be an offense against the United States, is punishable as a principal."
Therefore, a hate crimes law would punish those who are perceived to have induced a hate crime – including pastors, talk show hosts, and authors – for their sermons, books, etc. Dept. of Justice training for police officers already considers Fundamentalists as being hate groups.
Action Steps: WE MAY ONLY HAVE ONE OR TWO DAYS TO DEFEAT THIS!
1.) Call your two U.S. Senators today at 202-224-3121 and state your opposition to any
expansion of hate crimes laws. Ask them to pull the bill from the floor and get rid of the
hate crime amendment. Direct numbers, e-mail and website links for each Senator can be
found on our Coast2Coast state pages.
2.) Call President Bush at 202-456-1414 and ask him to promise to veto any legislation that
includes hate crimes.
3.) Visit www.StopHateCrimesNow.com to learn other ways you can help to get the word
out about this extremely dangerous legislation.
