Mr. President, It's Time to Dance With the Ones Who Brung Ya'

(AgapePress) - The whole thing is laughable. That is, watching these Senate Democrats like Ted Kennedy, Patrick Leahy and Barbara Feinstein call on President Bush to consult with them and nominate a "mainstream" candidate to replace retiring Supreme Court Justice Sandra Day O'Connor. Honestly, they look like fools on television when they do this. I imagine them wearing Mickey Mouse ears when they speak. Like President Bush should give a rip what these liberal politicians say. And like they might even consider voting yes to anyone President Bush would nominate for the high court.

It is indeed comical.

In politics, one man's "mainstream" is another man's "extreme." Just ask Mississippi's own Charles Pickering, who became yet another racist devil-man to Democrats when he was named by President Bush for a position on the Fifth Circuit Court of Appeals a couple of years back. Never mind that he was backed by many black leaders in the area he was from. The people who knew him best said he was fine man who went out of his way to work with blacks. What the Democrats did to Pickering they now do routinely to men and women appointed to the federal bench by President Bush. And get ready, they are about to do it again. And it doesn't matter one whit who the president names, the press releases have already been written by groups like the National Organization for Women, the National Abortion Rights Action League, the American Civil Liberties Union, People for the American Way, the National Association for the Advancement of Colored People, and in the Democratic senators' offices. All that remains to be done is fill in the blank with a name. President Bush will give these groups that name in a few days. Then they can begin the character assassination that they have become so adapt at doing. They are pros at it now. These Democratic senators will even do it to one of their own. Remember, said these liberals, John Ashcroft (a U.S. senator himself) was going to end civil rights in America when he took over as Attorney General. That was their claim during his confirmation hearing. Ashcroft was barely confirmed and Democratic senators who had worked with him and known him for years went along with the smear and unsubstantiated charges of racism. These left-wingers have no shame.

The president has 55 Republicans to work with in the United States Senate. The five-vote majority comes after years of hard work on the part of conservatives all across the country -- especially in the South and Midwest. All he needs is 50 to confirm his Supreme Court nominee. Even if four or five liberal GOP senators vote against his nominee, the person will still be confirmed to sit on the court for life.

The idea will be promoted by liberal groups and Democratic senators that somehow President Bush owes it to "America" to name someone like Justice O'Connor to replace Justice O'Connor. That is a standard pulled out of thin air. President Bush doesn't want the court to remain the same. That was one of the main issues of his campaign. The American people who voted for him understood that and factored it in when deciding between him and John Kerry. President Bush has said before that he desires to name justices who think more along the lines of Clarence Thomas and Antonin Scalia, not Sandra Day O'Connor.

On another level, the conservative movement has made it clear to President Bush that they have worked too hard for too long to have another stealth candidate like David Souter put up. For those who don't remember, the first President Bush's chief of staff John Sununu told his boss and the conservatives to "trust me" that Souter was -- indeed -- conservative. Well, we trusted Sununu and we got duped. That is not going to happen this time if conservative leaders have anything to do with it -- and they do. This is why current Attorney General Alberto Gonzales is not acceptable to most conservatives because he is a great unknown.

One of the main desires of the conservative movement is to overturn Roe v. Wade and send the question of abortion back to the individual states. And there are so many other issues that need to be decided at a state legislative level, not by the U.S. Supreme Court.

The bottom line is, Patrick Leahy can hyperventilate on C-SPAN, Diane Feinstein can say the sky is falling, and Ted Kennedy can squeal like pig; it does not matter. George W. Bush does not need the vote of one Democratic senator to change the face of the Supreme Court. It is up to him.

So, Mr. President, the start of a return to judicial sanity in this country depends on you. And as they say in Texas -- it's time to dance with the one who brung you.
